FAQs About Our Nursing & Residential Home in Brixton, Plymouth
Here, we have compiled a list of FAQs from our residents, and their relatives or significant others. If you have any other questions, please do not hesitate to call us on 01752 880465, and ask to speak to our Registered Manager, Sam Burdekin.
Is There a Minimum Length of Stay?
No, there is no minimum length of stay at our Nursing & Residential Care Home. We cater for any length of stay, including Convalescence and Respite Care.
Can I Keep My Own Doctor?
This depends entirely on your Doctor, who may be prepared to visit you. Rest assured, we have an excellent relationship with the local surgery, so a Doctor is always at hand.
Can I Smoke in My Room?
No, to comply with the law, no smoking is allowed anywhere indoors. However, we do have a smoking area at the rear of the building, which you are welcome to use.
Is There a Local Church?
St Mary’s Church is just a couple of hundred yards down the road, but we also have a visiting Vicar and Priest who will give Communion.
What Is Your Policy with Pets?
Depending on individual circumstances, we may agree for you to keep your pet, but this decision is entirely at our discretion. We do arrange pet therapy from Animals2U, which includes a diverse range of animals, such as rabbits, cats, dogs, tortoises, and lizards.
Can a Relative Stay Over?
We have a few excellent Bed and Breakfasts nearby offering very reasonable rates. For relatives during their loved one’s last days of life, we can provide a camp bed.
What Organised Activities or Trips Are There?
We don’t currently offer organised day trips. However, we offer a wide range of activities within the home.
We have a group activity every week, which includes musical entertainment, exercise classes, pet therapy, quizzes and bingo. Additionally, we have an activities coordinator who carries out one-to-one activities with residents. This includes pamper sessions, games, reminiscing and anything that the residents would like to do.
Is My Designated Next of Kin Kept Informed?
Yes, we take special note of relatives’ requests and will react in any way required on an individual basis.
What Funding Arrangements Do You Accept?
The Lawns accepts self-funded, local authority-funded, and state-funded residents, provided the total fee payable meets the fee required for the assessed care needs of a resident.
Local authority-funded residents may require a private top-up fee in order to ensure the total fee payable meets the assessed care needs of the resident.

Do You Have WiFi?
Free WiFi is available in all of the rooms at The Lawns.
What Staffing Arrangements Do You Have?
Planned weekday morning shifts are staffed by two qualified nurses and seven care assistants. For afternoons, the planned weekday shifts are staffed by one to two qualified nurses and six care assistants, while evenings are staffed by one qualified nurse and six care assistants.
All overnight shifts are staffed by one qualified nurse and two care assistants.
The specific levels of care provided to each resident will depend on an individualised care needs assessment. A nurse call system is installed within the home, enabling residents to request assistance. Pressure mats and chair sensors are connected to the nurse call system as a form of automated monitoring, based on the outcome of an individual care needs assessment.
