About Our Team
Welcome to The Lawns Nursing & Residential Care Home
With ~45 employees, mainly from the local area, we are incredibly proud that many of our staff members are long-standing, with some serving for as long as 30 years. Over the years, we have become a close-knit community, resulting in many mutual friendships among staff, residents, and their families.
Our Dedicated Team of Care Home Workers
With on-duty nurses 24 hours a day and a local Doctor available Monday to Friday, we also offer regular visits from our Dentist, Optician, Chiropodist, and Hairdresser.

About Husband-and-Wife Team, Sam & Lucie Burdekin
After graduating with 1st class honours from Plymouth University, Sam Burdekin, our Registered Manager & a Registered Nurse, joined the district nursing team in Derriford. In 2018, he returned to The Manor Nursing & Residential Home to work as a nurse and train for the deputy manager role, having previously worked there as a healthcare assistant for 6 years. He took over as Registered Manager in 2020, managing the care home through the pandemic. In 2023, he was asked to take over The Lawns and assumed the role.
From the age of 17, Lucie Burdekin, our Deputy Manager, worked as a carer at The Manor for 7 years. She then studied Speech & Language Therapy at Plymouth Marjon University, graduating with 1st class honours. Due to the lack of speech therapy roles at the time, she spent 8 years working in the television industry. In 2023, she joined The Lawns as she wanted to return to healthcare.

Day-to-Day Running of The Lawns
Sam is proud to be a St Luke’s Hospice 6 Steps EOL Champion and takes great joy from seeing the difference we can make to the lives of the residents who call The Lawns home. As a manager, he always leads with a nurse-first approach to ensure compassion, kindness, and care for both residents and staff. Every day is different, which is one of the things he loves about the role.
Lucie’s role is very dynamic, and she enjoys helping the residents and ensuring we give them the best care possible. One of her main responsibilities is writing care plans, tailored to meet each individual’s specific needs.
Outside of work, Sam sings in a folk choir called The Lost Sound, is a keen musician, and enjoys spending time outdoors, running, cycling, and birdwatching. Lucie enjoys being outside in nature and spending time in her garden.
