About The Lawns Nursing & Residential Care Home
As a small, independent Nursing & Residential Care Home, located in the peaceful village of Brixton, Plymouth, The Lawns is run by a husband-and-wife team, Sam Burdekin (Registered Manager) and Lucie Burdekin (Deputy Manager). With individual care plans tailored to each of our residents, it allows them to still have complete control over all aspects of their daily life.
Our care home is fully accredited by all relevant governing bodies, including Care Quality Commission (CQC), to provide care for adults aged 65 and above, as well as adults with dementia and physical disabilities. Additionally, we are in the process of being accredited by St Luke’s Hospice Six Steps + Programme.
Our Commitment to Quality, Person-Centred Care
Working closely with the local Community Rehabilitation team, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, and the District & Community Nursing team, we provide the highest standards of care for both long-term and short-term residents. Whether you require Palliative Care, Dementia Care, Residential & Nursing Care, or Respite & Rehab Care, people from all walks of life are welcome.
Our kind and compassionate team specialises in providing full-term nursing care, in addition to care for those living with long-term conditions, such as Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, Dementia, Diabetes, COPD, and Motor Neurone Disease. Rest assured, our trained nurses are on call 24 hours a day, and we have a local surgery where a doctor is available Monday through Friday. Your rights to privacy and dignity are rigorously upheld.

Reaching the time when a much loved family member needs to go into a care home is one of the most difficult decisions we have ever had to make.
When I realised that my husband needed more care than we could give him at home we did look at other homes. We are so pleased that we found The Lawns at Brixton.
Julian is treated with compassion, empathy, kindness and care from each and every one on Sam’s team. The team also go the extra mile by getting to know us as a family and have been very kind to us too.
My sons and I have felt truly supported by the team at The Lawns. They are professional, caring and take the time to really get to know each resident’s needs. We feel happy that Julian is not only well cared for but he is happy and content himself. Thank you it means so much to us.

In October 2022 when it became apparent that I needed to find a care home for my elderly auntie I was quite unsure if things would work out as I wanted them to. Living 450 miles away in Scotland and being a senior nurse, who was perhaps going to be a little more pedantic that some, I was apprehensive to say the least. I need never have been concerned. I travelled to Devon to look at care homes with the firm mindset of the nursing home placement rather than a residential home requiring only one move in her latter years of her life. I made an appointment at the Lawns and arranged a visit. Our luck was in , it was just what we were looking for and there a room available.
On 6th June (2025) Auntie passed away peacefully in the Lawns and I cannot allow her end to pass without writing to express my sincere gratitude to you and your wonderful team. Since the very first day your staff, whatever their role, were so welcoming, polite, and friendly. Nothing was ever a trouble to them whether they were giving personal care, serving tea, taking meal requests, cleaning or were clerical, without exception they had time.
Our two and a half years in the Lawns has shown the best example possible of care in the latter years of human life. A delivery of care that was polite, respectful, personal and of a standard that was higher than I could have ever dared hope for. As a relative living far away all the staff had a wonderful skill in getting to know me so that I did not just feel like ‘her niece from Scotland’ and, when the last few days of auntie’s life came they delivered an ‘end of life’ care that was exemplary.
The Lawns Nursing home is indeed a credit to Wells House Limited and is a ‘Jewel in the crown’ in the provision of care for the elderly in South Devon.
